  • I remember having to take the car ferry over to get to the U.P. When the bridge first opened, the toll for a car was $15.00 Deer Hunters used to be backed up on the Highway ( not an interstate yet) for MILES in the 1950’s waiting for a trip over on the ferry as I-75 wasn’t completed from Indian River up to the bridge until 1960….. Always nervous going over the bridge, and especially riding a motorcycle over those grates!!!

    • Made that trip many times when my folks took us out of school for two weeks set up a 12×14 tent near Forest lake as a kid the learning experience was like no other. Seeing all the buck deer on the return trip was exciting.

    • Used to go to Munising from Muskegon with my Dad & Mom in the early 50’s to deer hunt. Can remember sitting waiting for the ferry. I was a very little girl but I remember the big Lake Superior at Munising Bay. So cold & snowy. Later in 1960 we went in the summer & stayed at the same place –swam every day in that frigid lake & had evening bonfires on the beach. Wonderful part of my state. Hiked to Miner’s Castle once & just enjoyed the beautiful weather & the area.

  • Brings back memories of when I was a kid and we would load up in the station wagon for the long trip up to the Soo Locs, I always loved leaning out the window when we were on the bridge and looking down. Thanks for the memory.

  • The ship tracking is a neat feature. I check back several times a day to see if I can catch a ship going under the bridge.
